Course Outline
The Licensed Trainer program for the Emergency Asthma Management short course is a one day professional development program that provides participants with a higher level of knowledge of asthma and the underlying mechanisms of the condition. This program then allows the participant to deliver the 3 hour Emergency Asthma Management Course to the Community.
Who can become an EAM Licensed Trainer?:
Anyone who has an interest in being involved in community training and can demonstrate current involvement in one of the following areas:
- First Aid providers to at least Instructor level
- Health educators in tertiary institutions
- Asthma educators
- Pharmacists
- Paramedics
- Registered nurses
Course pre-requisites:
This course is open to all people who have worked in the Health Care sector and can demonstrate currency. All participants must hold a current Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or equivalent.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The Asthma Foundation of Victoria recognises previous experiences and competencies that participants may have. Recognition of Prior Learning is available to participants who can demonstrate competencies within asthma or related fields.
Duration of the Licensed Trainer Course:
The duration of the EAM Licensed Trainers Course is currently 8 hours. (9.00am to 5.00pm with a half hour lunch break and two 15 minute tea breaks).
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided.
Cost:
The cost of the Licensed Trainer Course is $450.00
Participants will receive the following to assist in their training:
- Detailed participant manual with PowerPoint notes
- The Australian Asthma Management Handbook
- Copy of the text Know Your Asthma
- Relevant asthma brochures and information resources
- Relevant Model Policies and accompanying information resources
- Medication placebo devices
- CD ROM of the EAM PowerPoint presentation
Assessments:
There are three assessments for EAM Licensed Trainers course:
- During the 8 hours of class time learning, participants will be assessed on the use of asthma medication delivery devices
- Participants will be assessed on the recognition and management of an asthma episode
- A post course assignment consisting of a series of questions. This is to be completed within three weeks of the course
Qualifications:
Upon successful completion of the EAM Licencsed Trainer course participants will receive a ‘Statement of Attainment’ which is valid as long as the person remains a current Licensed Trainer.
To remain a current licensed trainer:
Teach a minimum of two EAM short courses per year.
Attend trainer updates organised by the Asthma Foundation of Victoria.
The Asthma Foundation of Victoria provides ongoing support and professional development for all Licensed Trainers.
Delivery of the EAM Course by Licensed Trainers
Qualified EAM Licensed Trainers are able to facilitate the Emergency Asthma Management Program in a variety of ways including:
- through their own training business
- through their employer, usually a Registered Training Organisation
- as contractors
- through The Asthma Foundation of Victoria
Training supplies:
All training resources needed to facilitate an EAM Program are available through The Asthma Foundation of Victoria.
