Emergency Asthma Management Course

Please note: the Emergency Asthma Management Course detailed below is conducted in the State of Victoria, Australia.

The Course in Emergency Asthma Management (EAM) is an accredited training course specifically designed to

  • promote the standardised emergency management protocols for treating an asthma attack,
  • raise the general level of awareness of asthma and emergency asthma management,
  • promote a proactive approach to asthma through the development of an asthma policy,
  • provide a registration protocol, which enables access to blue reliever medication for first aid purposes to be held in first aid kits.

The Victorian EAM Program is unique within Australia, has Office of Employment, Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE) accreditation and has national training recognition.

There are potentially two reasons for people to undertake the EAM Program:

  • to ensure somebody knows what to do in the case of an emergency, and
  • to provide the means to enable an organisation to hold blue reliever medication for first aid purpsoes in a first aid kit according to current regulations.

The EAM Course offers six modules:

  1. Workplaces,
  2. Sporting and recreational facilities,
  3. Schools, and Childcare
  4. Remote areas (specialised module)
  5. Supported accommodation (specialised module)

BAN Registration

The EAM Course is also the only vehicle for purchasing blue reliever asthma medication (bronchodilator) for use in First Aid Kits for asthma emergencies according to current regulations.

Community organisations can hold blue reliever medication in first aid kits once staff have successfully completed an EAM Course and applied for a Bronchodilator Accreditation Number (BAN) registration.

Bronchodilator Accreditation Number (BAN) registration

  • the BAN registration provides the 'purchasing authorisation’ that allows an organisation to purchase blue reliever medication from a Pharmacy, according to current regulations. (Ideally, an organisation only needs two to three people to hold a current BAN registration).

  • the BAN is an optional 'add on' component to the accredited EAM training.

  • only people who have successfully completed an EAM training program may apply for BAN registration.

  • applications for a BAN can only be made through The Asthma Foundation of Victoria.

  • BAN holders are responsible for maintaining the asthma component of their organisations first aid kit.

  • a BAN costs $27.50 and has a currency of three years from the date of Training.

Do Schools need a BAN?

Schools in Victoria do not need a BAN to purchase blue reliever medication.  Schools can purchase a blue reliever puffer for first aid purposes from a pharmacy on written authority from the principal.

The Asthma Foundation of Victoria offers a free one-hour education session to schools involved in the Asthma Friendly® Schools program.  To book an education session, please download the Booking Form
