Course Outline
This nationally accredited course provides knowledge about the underlying causes of asthma, the triggers, recognition and treatment of an asthma attack and how to develop an asthma action plan. The course includes a core module, Asthma Awareness, and is run in conjunction with four target modules. Two specialist modules are also offered.
The four target modules are:
- Asthma in Sport
This module is aimed at educating all people involved with sports and recreation about Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) and how it can be managed.
- Asthma and the Child in Care
This module reflects the requirements set by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It is aimed at educating childrens services workers in a variety of settings, in the recognition and management of a child with asthma, which is to be reflected in the running of their centres.
- Asthma in the Workplace
This module is aimed at educating all workplaces in the management of asthma, especially occupational asthma.
- Asthma in Schools
This module is aimed at providing teachers with the necessary skills to be able to recognise and manage an asthma attack. Exercise induced asthma and low allergy options are also discussed.
There are two specialised modules:
- Asthma in Supported Accommodation
This module is specifically tailored to meet the needs of carers and their clients in special care facilities and in-home care. It is a contextualised module that is specific to each accommodation area.
