Thunderstorm asthma — a timely reminder

Posted: November 07, 2011

The approach of spring, together with high winter rainfall in and around Melbourne,1 heralds another severe pollen season, raising the risk of allergic rhinitis and asthma in pollen-sensitive individuals. It is therefore timely to report an epidemic of “thunderstorm asthma” that occurred in Melbourne during spring 2010.

Hi there, I just had a severe attack due to the hot weather I believe and went to the emergency as my chest was tight for 2 days and i was very weak. I went in and they used there nebulizer which helps alot. I am on the mend but still recovering so a big thanks to the Alfred Emergency but not having private health insurance ment I had to wait at least 2 hours while a person with sunburn walked straight though. Also cigarette smoke sparks off my Asthma severely so watch out for that. Also anyone get funny feeings in there arm after using alot of there Ventolin?

Hi Ramesh,

Sorry to hear you have had a rough time. Reliever medication and a spacer it is important to have on hand at all times, and may help next time your chest feels tight. For more information, contact us at the Asthma Foundation on advice@asthma.org.au, or see our facebook page for useful tips.

As a long time Asthma sufferer I am struggling this season with awful hayfever.
I am mindful that not taking care of the the symptoms sees me weakened and heading into Winter with less resistance against cold or flu. I am trying to find a comprehensive list of Australian plants that set off hayfever. There are plenty of lists available for allergy friendly gardens but few that show images of the ones to avoid. Are you able to assist?

Hi Julie,

I would recommend that you have a look at our 'Low Allergen Garden' brochure that contains useful information. Click on the 'Resources' tab on the top of this page (underneath our telephone number) and follow the links to our brochures available online. Another alternative is the 'Asthma and Allergy Friendly Gardens' published by the Asthma Foundation of NSW and available at (http://www.asthmafoundation.org.au/uploadedFiles/Content/About_Asthma/Resources/AsthmaFriendlyGarden_brochure_lowres.pdf). If the brochures do not contain the images you are after I would suggest using an Australian gardening website for more pictures.

Feel free to contact us at the Asthma Foundation of Victoria via advice@asthma.org.au or call our toll-free number 1800 645 130
