Charlie Buchner, 16, of Caulfield South, hopes his celebrity sandwich book makes plenty of dough.
Did you know that Elmo’s sandwich of choice is a crab melt? Neither did I. But I’ve learnt quite a few celebrity favourites since my cousin, Casey Rosengarden and I decided to create a book of sandwich recipes based on the tastes of the rich and famous.
The idea formed about a year ago. Originally we wanted to create a cookbook, but we decided to narrow it down to sandwiches. To make it different, we contacted as many celebrities as we could for their favourites. Most have been really enthusiastic and happy to help, although a few said no and there were some others we never heard back from.
Money made from the book will go to the Little Dreamers foundation which was founded by my sisters, Madeleine and Rebecca.
Little Dreamers supports the brothers and sisters of sick kids to make sure they’re not forgotten when the focus is on their sibling’s illness.
It came about because I have epilepsy and bad asthma. Every winter as a kid I’d always end up in hospital. My sisters sometimes felt left out, but turned that into something positive because now they are helping other kids in the same situation.
The foundation has raised funds for other charities and also helps to make dreams come true for those kids. In the past, kids have been taken for a ride in a pink stretch limo and to see Usher in concert.
One of the best parts of getting responses was finding out the story behind the sandwich, how it came to be that person’s favourite, and we will include those little tales in the book.
One of the most simple recipes, which had a great story, came from Jessica Watson, who sailed around the world alone when she was 16. Jessica’s sandwich was a peanut butter sandwich and chocolate milk, which she said is something she would have when she was alone out at sea and really missing home. That was her homesickness cure.
My favourite recipe came from Mick Molloy because it included washing down the sandwich with a chocolate Big M and putting Burger Rings inside the sandwich.
There will be more than 70 recipes from different people in the book, The Little Dreamers Celebrity Sandwich Cookbook.
Everyone asks us what Shane Warne’s favourite sandwich is. You’ll have to get the book to find out.
We expect to launch the book in April through Bakers Delight stores.
