PLANNED BURNS - 7 Day Outlook and Daily Notification North East Victoria
16 April - 23 April 2012

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Parks Victoria are undertaking more planned burning to reduce the risk of bushfire to people, property and communities.

Reducing fuel loads near communities and remote areas can reduce the threat of damaging bushfires to communities and the environment. This means communities may be affected by smoke.

7 Day North East Victoria Planned Burning Outlook and Planned Burns Tomorrow
Stable conditions over the past seven days have resulted in a good opportunities for planned burning in the northern half of the North East Region. These conditions will likely continue until later this week. Previous weeks heavy rainfall in southern parts of the North East Region has meant that burning opportunities there will continue to be limited.
Due to this, most of the planned burning activity will be occurring in the Upper Murray and Ovens Fire Districts.
Some of these burns will be reignition on burns that were ignited in previous days or weeks.  

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Parks Victoria advise that planned burning may be carried out in the following areas tomorrow, Tuesday 17 April 2012, weather conditions permitting:

Goulburn District:

  • Moonlight Track - A 224 hectare fuel reduction burn located in the Warby Ovens National Park, 2km NNW of Glenrowan


Murrindindi District:
Toolangi, Marysville Alexandra and Broadford Areas - Commercial timber harvesting regeneration burns located in areas around Toolangi, Marysville, Alexandra and  Broadford.

Ovens District:

  • Edi Range North - A 518 hectare fuel reduction burn located 2 km north east of Edi
  • Carboor Parkinsons Road - A 254 hectare fuel reduction burn located 7km south east of Carboor
  • Porepunkah Hores - A 68 hectare fuel reduction burn located 5.5 km south west of Porepunkah
  • Bright Demon Ridge - A 1069 hectare fuel reduction burn located 5 km south of Bright
  • Moyhu Timber Reserve - A 901 hectare fuel reduction burn located 10 km south of Moyhu
  • Smalls Lane - A 103 hectare fuel reduction burn located at Cheshunt
  • Carboor Range East - A 815 hectare fuel reduction burn located 3km west of Carboor


Upper Murray District:

  • Shelley Barkman Fireline - A 175 hectare fuel reduction burn located 12 km north east of Shelley
  • Upper Sandy Creek Egans - A 1204 hectare fuel reduction burn located 5 km south east of Gundowring
  • McLachlans Rd Thowgla - A 511 hectare fuel reduction burn located 11 km south east of Corryong

The following burns may be ignited in coming days subject to suitable conditions:

Goulburn District:
Bunyip 5 - A 17.5 hectare fuel reduction burn located 28km NNE of Nathalia
Chinamans Garden - A 273 hectare fuel reduction burn located at Tongalong Island, Barmah State Park
Black Springs - A 228 hectare fuel reduction burn located in the Warby Ovens National Park, 9km west of Wangaratta
Post Patch - A 45 hectare fuel reduction burn located in the Warby Ovens National Park, 9km west of Wangaratta
Mt Killawarra - A 140 hectare fuel reduction burn located 4km north east of Boweya
Mooroopna Common - A 30 hectare fuel reduction burn located 2 km south of Mooroopna

Murrindindi District:
Toolangi, Marysville Alexandra and Broadford Areas - Commercial timber harvesting regeneration burns located in areas around Toolangi, Marysville, Alexandra and Broadford.

  • Enochs Point, One Mile Creek - A 508 hectare fuel reduction burn located 4km south east of Enochs Point
  • Enochs Point, Enoch Creek - A 1701 hectare fuel reduction burn located 4km south east of Enochs Point
  • Big River State Forest - Foleys Creek Fireline - A 562 hectare fuel reduction burn located 20km ESE of Marysville


Ovens District:

  • Carboor Range West - A 492 hectare fuel reduction burn located 7km west of Moyhu
  • Baranduda Range Track - A 425 hectare fuel reduction burn located 8km south west of Baranduda
  • Mt Pilot Old Coach Road- A 1104 hectare fuel reduction burn located 5km east of Eldorado
  • Porepunkah Harris Lane - A 618 hectare fuel reduction burn located 4 km west of Porepunkah
  • Souters Tk- A 614 hectare fuel reduction burn located in Mt Barambogie State Forest
  • Masons Tk - A 815 hectare fuel reduction burn located 6 km south east of Eldorado
  • Lake Buffalo Dandongadale - A 3354 hectare fuel reduction burn located 13 km south of Lake Buffalo        
  • Cheshunt Wabonga Track - A 1821 hectare fuel reduction burn located 7 km south of Cheshunt        
  • Cheshunt MacMillans Track - A 2185 hectare fuel reduction burn located 11 km south of Cheshunt        
  • Willowbank - A 90 hectare fuel reduction burn located 6 km NNE of Myrhee
  • Waters Lane - A 60 hectare fuel reduction burn located 2 km north of Carboor
  • Baranduda Stringybark Block - A 8 hectare fuel reduction burn located at Baranduda
  • Moyhu Edi Range South - A 926 hectare fuel reduction burn located 12 km south east of Moyhu

Upper Murray District:

  • Omeo Highway Mt Wills - A 2 hectare fuel reduction burn located 6km north of Glen Valley
  • Mt Wills - A 1600 hectare fuel reduction burn located 30km south east of Mt Beauty
  • Walwa Shelley Road - A 2 hectare fuel reduction burn located 6km north of Glen Valley
  • Bruno - A 5 hectare fuel reduction burn located on the Gibb Range

DSE and PV are doing more planned burning to reduce the risk of bushfire to people, property and communities. You may be affected by smoke from these planned burns.

What to do

  • If you are experiencing any symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure, the Department of Health advises that you should seek medical advice or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.

Road users

  • Road travel may be hazardous due to low visibility associated with smoke;
  • Signs may be in place to slow traffic. Obey all traffic signs and instructions from fire agency crews near the burn.
  • For road closures check www.vicroads.vic.gov.au
  • Access to walking tracks, car parks, camping grounds and picnic sites in areas close to or in burn areas may be restricted [– list these if possible.]

Smoke and your home

  • Close windows and doors to prevent smoke from entering.
  • Avoid hanging washing out.
